Tour Day 11 (Mar 7th)

Ross to Haast Village (267km)

The South Island does seem to be the more scenic of the two. This may  be simply down to my love of mountains.

Breakfast this morning was in a museum. Well, a cafe/museum with bikes and other odds'n'sods. The ride this morning took us between two ranges of mountains covered by forestry, tops obscured by cloud. Between them were more flat plains, a couple of large lakes and numerous rivers and streams (all named and signposted). It is noticeably cooler and more cloudy in the south.

We booked a helicopter trip trip over the Franz Josef glacier, but this was unfortunately called off at the last minute due to the lowering cloud levels. Instead, we paid a visit to the Fox glacier (nothing to do with mints!).

A further run to our destination took us through a mass of forestry and ferns to a very remote location of the island. There is nothing of any real importance here for about 150km in either direction, but it is really nice.

The hotel owner took us for a buggy ride on the beach. As soon as I saw it, I recognised it as being very similar to the Banana Buggies from the Banana Splits TV program from all those years ago. It was a fantastic run.

A great meal in the restaurant up the road, followed by a cheese, wine and chocolate party finished the day off perfectly ... and I'm feeling fat.
